Acne vulgaris (acne), a chronic inflammatory disease, is prevalent among adolescents and adults, and cause significant psychological effects. Its etiology remains multifactorial.

Among several pathophysiological associations identified, Propionibacterium acnes has a major role. This bacteria primarily target areas containing oil glands, including the face, back and trunk, where it initiates seborrhea and inflammatory lesions.

Currently utilized treatment methods have side effects. Thus, a novel alternative method with no side effects is required.

Karlapudi et al synthesized an exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing bacterial-based nanoparticle as a stable, biocompatible material for drug delivery; and also evaluated the effectiveness of EPS-based nanoparticle cream against P. acnes.

They observed that EPS nanoparticles have great potential as a safe and effective topical treatment for acne vulgaris and other associated infections.
